Information

Thesprotia Prefecture

The Prefecture of Thesprotia covers the northwestern part of the region of Epirus. With an area of 1,515 sq. km. and a population of 46,000 inhabitants, it is one of the most populated prefectures in the country. Its capital is Igoumenitsa, with the largest harbor in northwestern Greece. Thesprotia is predominantly mountainous with some valleys between the mountain ranges and although the coast is steep, there are many small or big bays along the coastline. The region's economy is based primarily on agriculture and livestock breeding. The craft industry is noticeable, too. Tourism, trade and transports have developed a lot in the past years, employing 1/3 of the population of the prefecture. At the coast of Thesprotia, particularly the area around Sivota, there are tourist facilities. No one will be disappointed as there are cosmopolitan and organized beaches for those who like the crowds and others who are almost deserted for those who seek isolation. The natural environment with mountain trails, rivers, valleys and plateaus has always attracted nature lovers. Also, among the attractions of Thesprotia, you will find many churches and monasteries.
